Klein Cain Student Honored by Houston Touchdown Club

Klein Cain Varsity football player and Washington University commit Abhinav Potluri has been named the 2024 Houston Touchdown Club Scholar Athlete award recipient.

Abhinav is a stellar athlete and outstanding scholar who is an All-District football player, ranking at number 14 in his senior class. In the fall, Abhinav plans to continue playing football and earning a dual degree in Computer Engineering and Finance.

“My primary focus has always been to excel in football while securing a top-tier education,” Potluri said. “This award feels like an acknowledgment of my dedication to these goals, and it's incredibly rewarding to see my efforts recognized in this way.”

As an ambitious scholar, he sets high standards to reach his goals, which don’t stop with his education. His interest in finance and how it can help businesses grow and succeed drives Abhinav’s career goal of being an Investment Banker on Wall Street.

“I’m just really proud of him. He’s someone who holds high standards for himself both academically and on the field. He’s always been very transparent about the goals he sets for himself and goes after them,” Klein Cain Athletic Director James Clancy said. “This is a huge testament to our campus curriculum and expectations as a district.”

This is the first time since 2016 that a Klein ISD student has won this award. The organization has given the Houston Touchdown Club Scholar Athlete Award since 1999, awarding student-athletes about $250,000 in scholarship funds.

“It feels like an accolade for the years of dedication and hard work I've put into my sport and academics. This achievement was never a solo effort,” Potluri said. “I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to the Klein Cain football coaches—Coach Poth, who has been a mentor to me, teaching me invaluable lessons both on and off the field; Coach Clancy, our head coach, who has always supported me; and Coach Conrad, who has been instrumental in guiding me through the recruiting process. My teachers have also been pivotal in my growth, offering invaluable lessons beyond textbooks.”

The applications of the finalists for the Houston Touchdown Club Scholar Athlete Award are reviewed by the presidents of the University of Houston, Rice, Texas Southern, and Houston Baptist. The winner is chosen by the Touchdown Club and is awarded scholarship funds.

“I was so proud to see Abhinav named the Houston Touchdown Club’s Scholar Athlete of the Year. There were so many amazing nominees, distinguishing yourself amongst that group is an accomplishment,” Klein ISD Executive Director of Athletics Brandon Baker said. “He is the epitome of what we want to see from our student-athletes in Klein ISD. Congratulations, Abhinav!”

Congratulations, Abhinav, on this outstanding achievement! Your dedication to success on and off the field is genuinely admirable, and your Klein Family is so proud of you.
